ABOUT
Born in 1986, Samatha Weerasekera is an emerging artist who works primarily in pencil and and marker on paper. Her diverse subject matter reflects her wide-ranging interests, encompassing trains, birds, flowers, and people, alongside beloved characters from popular culture.
Weerasekera has recently expanded her practice to include watercolour, demonstrating her commitment to exploring new techniques and materials. Her work draws inspiration from Melbourne public transport, the natural world and contemporary media, which she translates into her own distinctive drawing style.
As an early career artist, Weerasekera's practice is characterised by an authentic engagement with subjects that bring her joy and fascination. Her work represents a contemporary approach to drawing that bridges observational studies of the world around her with the rich visual language of popular culture, creating a unique artistic voice that celebrates everyday experiences. Through her consistent focus on drawing, Weerasekera is developing a body of work that demonstrates both technical skill and personal expression.
