Pixie Albert is a self-taught artist known for her humorous and expressive drawings of Australian animals. Working primarily in graphite and watercolour pencil, she transforms everyday native creatures into playful characters brimming with personality and charm.
Drawing since childhood, Pixie Albert has developed a distinctive artistic process that begins with original graphite sketches created in her home studio. She then photocopies these initial works and reworks them using Derwent watercolour pencils—a treasured gift from her mother—adding layers of colour and character to bring her animal subjects to life. Her methodical approach involves extensive research through online resources, creating multiple test pieces to capture the precise position, movement, and pose that best expresses each creature's unique personality.
Working on sketch paper and transferring her images to watercolour paper or card via photocopying at local print shops, Pixie Albert's practice represents a resourceful and innovative approach to art-making. She incorporates gold gel pens and other mixed media to add finishing touches that enhance the playful nature of her work. Her commitment to retaining ownership of her original artworks reflects a deep personal connection to her creative output, viewing each piece as an irreplaceable part of her artistic journey. Through her continued exploration of Australian fauna, Pixie Albert is building a distinctive body of work that celebrates the character and humour found in the natural world around us.
