ABOUT

Maya Tamang, working under the artist name Miss Martha, is a disability activist and emerging artist whose practice is deeply rooted in lived experience and authentic expression. Through painting, drawing, and mixed media works, Tamang creates evocative artworks that offer raw and honest depictions of her journey with mental health, whilst exploring broader themes of female portraiture, fashion, and their intersection with well-being.

Working primarily in acrylics on canvas, Tamang incorporates unconventional materials including lace, oil pastel, posca pen, lipstick, and watercolour paint to create works that challenge traditional artistic boundaries. Her distinctive 1940s-inspired aesthetic draws from her passion for fashion, design, architecture, and heritage interiors, creating a unique visual language that is instantly recognisable.

Tamang's artistic practice extends beyond the studio as a tool for advocacy and community building. Through her work, she aims to create safe and inclusive spaces where sensitive subjects can be addressed openly, fostering understanding and empathy within the community.

As she articulates, "Art is about communication," and her intention is clear: to inspire others who may be struggling to "push through and prevail" and recognise that "life is really beautiful." Having recently begun exhibiting, Tamang is committed to expanding her platform through public speaking and continued advocacy, drawing inspiration from figures like Miss Edgeley and Abbie Chatfield as she develops her voice as both an artist and activist.
