Maya Tamang and Jump Left on ABC News
We're thrilled to share that ABC News has featured Maya Tamang's first solo exhibition, I Ain't No Fancy Bird, and the way we work alongside artists to build sustainable careers.
Written by journalist Ethan Seiderman, the story steps into Maya's world of glamour, camp and old Hollywood. Her paintings draw on classic films and larger-than-life icons, alongside a series of portraits of comedian and cabaret performer Reuben Kaye, who sat for Maya over several sessions.
The piece also looks at the side of an art career that often goes unseen: applications, gallery correspondence, framing and installation. For many neurodivergent artists, this is where momentum can stall. We work one-on-one with artists through these steps. For this show, Maya and Sim shaped her artist statement together through recorded conversations, until the words were entirely Maya's own.
The exhibition opened on 24 July during Open House Melbourne, with more than 200 guests, special appearances from The Huxleys and mezzo soprano Dimity Shepherd, and sales on the night.
For Maya, it all comes back to the work. As she told the ABC, "I love bringing people happiness, and connecting."
