Behind the Scenes: A Day at Studio 92 Colac
There's something magical about visiting an art space where creativity flows unrestricted by convention. My recent visit to Studio 92 in Colac was precisely this kind of experience—a reminder of why inclusive art spaces are so vital to our cultural landscape.
A Warm Welcome to Colac's Creative Hub
Nestled at 70 Murray Street in the heart of Colac, Studio 92 immediately strikes you as more than another regional gallery. The moment you step through the doors, you're greeted by an explosion of colour and energy that speaks to the studio's mission: creating a dynamic, inclusive space where artists of all abilities can thrive.
Guided by Passion
One of the highlights of my visit was touring the studio with Andrea Shaw, whose dedication to the artists and their work is immediately apparent. Andrea guided me through the current exhibitions featuring the bold, vibrant works of Cheryl Cutting and Brian Quigley—two artists whose distinctive styles and fearless use of colour transform the gallery walls into a celebration of creative expression.
The privilege of going behind the scenes offered invaluable insights into how Studio 92 operates. From the specially designed workspaces to the collaborative atmosphere, every element has been thoughtfully considered to support artists in their practice.
Community in Action
What struck me most was the palpable energy from staff and volunteers supporting the artists. Their enthusiasm was infectious, creating an atmosphere where creativity is nurtured and celebrated. During Cheryl and Brian’s exhibition opening, this sense of community was on full display—artists, supporters, and visitors coming together to appreciate the power of inclusive arts practice.
More Than Just Art
Studio 92 represents something far greater than the sum of its parts. It's not just an art gallery and studio but also a performing arts group that showcases the diverse talents of local artists. This multidisciplinary approach ensures that creativity in all its forms can find expression within these walls.
The space serves as a powerful reminder that when we create truly inclusive environments, the artistic outcomes are richer, more diverse, and ultimately more reflective of our shared humanity.
Supporting Inclusive Arts
If you find yourself in Victoria's western district, I cannot recommend a visit to Studio 92 highly enough. Beyond enjoying the remarkable artwork on display, your visit supports an initiative that is changing lives through creative practice.
