CREATING ALONGSIDE EACH OTHER WITH MUSIC
by Jennifer Gilbert, Art et al.
For this ‘Capturing Surrounding’ 2024 Peer/Peer collaboration, Angkasa Nasrullah Emir from Tab Space in Indonesia created new work live and in-between sessions with UK-based artist Richard Phoenix. Creating alongside each other whilst listening to music over Zoom allowed for further inspiration, with each artist mimicking what the other had been doing. After hearing about Angkasa's passions, Richard quickly came up with a list that they agreed to focus on - food, music, and celebrations, ultimately a birthday party: "ulang tahun." From this point on, large-scale drawings and paintings grew to incorporate all elements of parties, as well as smaller cut-out objects in cardboard and wood that could feature separately. Food was a big topic of conversation, the guestlists, and of course the presents! Both artists created their biggest ever works.
Expanding Surrounding builds on the successful Art et al. x Tab Space 2024 'Capturing Surrounding' UK/Indonesia collaboration funded by British Council. This exhibition includes two collections of work by Angkasa Nasrullah Emir and Richard Phoenix to illustrate the depth of our collaborations over recent times.

RICHARD PHOENIX / UK
As part of Richard's artistic practice, he paints, draws, writes, makes music and is constantly learning about how these things can help people be together. He primarily makes figurative work because of his fascination with people. He uses both real and imagined individuals as subjects but also explores how our interactions with each other can reveal more profound questions about how the world is structured. Richard creates work that is bright, fluid and embraces imperfection, to mirror qualities in the world he wants to see himself.
